In 2016, Manu made his debut nationally for the New Zealand Kiwis against the fearsome Kangaroos in the 2016 Anzac Test. Currently, Ma'u is playing for the NRL team the Parramatta Eels. He is an agile and quick second rower who can also be used in the centres.
Ma'u had a big year in 2014, as the hard-working and gifted second-rower was granted the opportunity to play in the NRL by the Parramatta Eels. Ma’u was eager to pay back Parramatta’s faith and this is exactly what he did. Parramatta initially signed Ma’u on a one year deal following his barnstorming debut where Ma’u won the Man of the Match award. The Eels immediately re-signed him on a two-year deal that was later extended until 2017 following more good form.
Ma’u’s first season included 13 first grade appearances, with one try scored in the process. The only thing stopping Ma’u from having acquired more appearances was an unfortunate injury which halted the terrific progress he was making.
In what was a scary thought for his opponents, Ma’u came back much stronger and proved to be even more impressive in his second full NRL season, after gaining experience and exposure. He ended the season playing 22 games for the Eels, accumulating 20 points, five tries, 603 tackles, 291 hit-ups, one try assist, four line breaks and 2440 metres.
What's even more impressive than his stats on the field? His comeback appearance off the field. Take a look at just what his teammates have to say about him.
"I've seen him a few times now, he's focused and he wants to succeed but he's quite humble. As a person off the paddock, he's really respectful. The guys that I spoke to, they gave him glowing references and no one said a bad word about him".
"He turned up in really good shape. He turned up with the attitude that he's going to make it, no excuses. He's put in all the hard work and he's starting to reap the rewards now".
